Your Differential Is an Engineering Marvel

Getting power from your engine to your wheels and creates actual motion is no simple task. There are a lot of processes and gears involved in getting your car, truck, or SUV to move forward or backward.

The engine obviously generates the power needed for your vehicle to move. It works with the transmission to provide the gearing to turn the drive shaft. The drive shaft runs along the vehicle underneath and goes from the front to the back. This is what interfaces with the differential, which is what sends the power to the axles.

Your differential is essentially a gearbox that is turned by the drive shaft. It is set up in such a way that it allows torque to be sent to the left and right wheels at different rates so that when entering a turn the driver isn't fighting the vehicle through it. It allows one wheel to spin slower than the other to that the turn can be made smoothly.
